Statement from Ontario PC Leader Patrick Brown on Pope John Paul II Day
The following is a statement from Ontario PC Leader Patrick Brown on Pope John Paul II Day:
“In 2014, the Ontario legislature voted unanimously to designate April 2 as Pope John Paul II Day in our province. I was proud to support a similar bill, brought forward by Wladyslaw Lizon, in the Canadian House of Commons.
Saint John Paul II is a widely admired figure, respected by Roman Catholics and non-Catholics alike. As Pope, he travelled to every corner of the earth, including to Ontario on two occasions: in 1984 and again in 2002 to celebrate World Youth Day. World Youth Day was celebrated with approximately 800,000 participants in Toronto.
His message of hope, embodied in his famous phrase “be not afraid,” inspired millions around the world and his Canonization ensures that it will endure into the future.
We also remember him as a champion of liberty for his invaluable contributions to the freeing of Central and Eastern Europe from communist tyranny.
I join with all Roman Catholics, Ontarians of Polish origin and others on this second annual Pope John Paul II Day in remembering this important figure in our shared history.”
