Re: Review of Our Class, April 9

The claim that virtually the entire Jewish population of Jedwabne, a town in Poland, was put to death by the gentile population, has been discredited by an officialinvestigation of that crime. Of the approximately 600 Jews in that town in 1941, about half escaped. Jewish testimonies state that between 125 and 300 Jews returned and were confined in a ghetto. Many others stayed away.

The earliest Jewish testimonies also describe the direct participation of the German invaders in that crime. According to Rivka Fogel's testimony, Jakub Katz, whom Poles are shown as savagely murdering in the play, was in fact killed by the Germans together with several other Jews.
